Will a Replacement Dishwasher Fit? Measure the Opening Before Delivery

A dishwasher sold as a 24-inch model still has to clear your counter, your finished floor and the cabinet across the aisle. Here’s what to measure before ordering.

A new layer of tile can leave a perfectly usable dishwasher sitting in a shallow pocket. The old machine still washes dishes, so the problem may only show up on delivery day, when the installer tries to pull it out. Before choosing a replacement, make two separate checks. Can the old unit come out, and can the new one fit and open fully?

Measure the opening you actually have

Start at the finished floor just in front of the dishwasher and measure up to the lowest edge under the countertop. Take that measurement on both sides. Note any strip of trim or lip below the counter. If the floor in front was installed after the dishwasher, photograph the change in level for the installer. Leave the existing appliance connected while you gather measurements.

Measure the clear width between the cabinets wherever you can reach it. Keep the smallest reading and mark any dimension you cannot see as “unknown.” The width of the old door tells you little about a tight spot farther back. If the old machine hides the rear of the opening, ask the installer to confirm the usable depth before you commit to a model.

Where to put the tape measure
Side to side
1. Measure acrossPut the tape against the inside of one cabinet wall. Read it at the opposite wall. Keep the narrowest reading.
UndersideFloor
2. Measure upRest the tape on the finished floor. Read it where it touches the underside of the counter. Check both sides.

3. Mark the open doorUse the model drawing to mark the open door’s tip on your floor. Open the drawer opposite. Would it hit that mark?

Give the open door its own measurement

Picture unloading the bottom rack. Is there room to stand beside it? Could the open dishwasher block a drawer that holds your cutlery? Look up the model’s depth with its door fully open and mark that reach on the floor with painter’s tape, using the same reference point as the drawing. Open the neighboring cabinet or drawer and see where they meet.

Send the installer the model number and a photo

Use the installation sheet for the exact model you want. For example, this Whirlpool installation drawing distinguishes the appliance body from the required opening and identifies where utility connections can sit. A Maytag planning drawing also gives the depth with the door fully open. Those dimensions apply to the models on those sheets.

Send the installer your narrowest width, lowest height, a photo of the floor edge and the exact model number. Ask them to confirm removal clearance and flag any cabinet or floor work separately in the quote. If the dishwasher is part of a larger project, include that work in your kitchen remodel budget before setting a delivery date.
